02 Jul I Survived My 7-Day Cleanse And 5 Reasons Why You Should Try One

I know I’ve been quiet for a while but it’s because I was doing some serious inner work. I led and took part in the 7-day Summer Countdown Cleanse. The good news is that I have safely landed on the other side and must admit that I am feeling really great. Every morning I felt rejuvenated by my morning meditation, tending to my patio garden and really letting the good food in my body do the work it was intended to do. Completing this process, took a lot of planning, preparation, and inner/outer strength. Doing the cleanse with a group of amazing women was the icing on the cake, although we definitely didn’t have any of that! :)

The first obvious perk was my clear complexion. I’ve always struggled with acne-prone skin, and recently I kept getting compliments about my glowing skin. Then came the energy, I took part in a walking program at work and combined it with my own workout on the weekends. The results were astounding! When I did a cleanse last year, it was strictly juices and smoothies, but this time I added salads, cooked and raw soups, and lots of liquids… except for coffee. While the cleanse was flexible enough to allow it, I made the choice to give it up completely. I felt free, really and truly free, as the need for “my fix” diminished as the days and weeks passed. During the 16-day program (this includes the total number of days with the pre/post cleanse period), I began to suffer from a serious case of saggy pants syndrome.

To be honest, I really haven’t transitioned to “normal eating”. By that I mean foods that are prevalent in the Standard American Diet (SAD), which I never really took part in anyway. There is too much gain from feeling this good and I have no intention of stopping. And while I’ve added some foods back, I am being extremely mindful of what I consume, both physically and mentally. It’s a great place to be. Health experts might dispute whether there is any benefit at all to cleansing, but I am here to tell you, it’s so much more than food. Need more coaxing? Here are 5 reasons why you should try an at-home cleanse for yourself:

  1. Your digestion sucks and so does being bloated, constipated and gassy. Cleansing allows your belly to get a much-deserved break from processed junk foods.
  2. You eat a lot of animal protein including dairy and meat AND very little plant-based foods. Your body is a machine and like a car could use a little TLC from time-to-time. Your cells will be happy, and happy cells make a happy and healthy YOU.
  3. An at-home cleanse, gets you into your kitchen. Many people these days are too exhausted to cook for themselves. Truth be told, you don’t know what restaurants are putting in your meals. Plus the portions, in most cases, are usually huge. Knowing how to cook and prepare your own meals, is a beautiful gift that keeps on giving.
  4. A cleanse is temporary but some of the elements of a cleanse should not be. Whether it’s a daily green smoothie/fresh juice, or starting your day with warm lemon water and ending it with ginger tea at night, a cleanse can be that incentive to introduce good eating habits to your existing regimen.
  5. You have the desire to add other lifestyle changes once you begin this journey. Admittedly, I am not a fan of working out. Doing a cleanse really pushed me to include fitness into my life. I love the hot weather, the outdoors and I love spending time with my family and friends. My walks (which have now turned to runs) always include my loved ones. This is a win for all!

So there you have it. As mentioned by Suzanne Boothby in her book Coming Clean: A Conscious Guide to Food Cleanses, there are many options when it comes to cleansing. The point is to make small but significant changes that lead to a new and improved you. I’m excited about the long road ahead and the future looks very bright. Have you done a cleanse? Are you contemplating doing one? I’d love to hear about it.

The cleanse is a worthwhile short-term goal as our bodies are made for feast and famine. It also reveals the power in your hands to make decisions. Among the biggest benefits is a new more profound mental capacity that includes prowess, clarity and self-control for healthier living.

And you’re one of my favorite women! I’m very excited to see where this cleanse will take you. Honestly, I could write another whole blog post about the miracles that occurred while going through this process. Good luck and enjoy the ride!
