10 Jan Elixir Profiles: Q&A with Latham Thomas

Latham Thomas is a graduate of Columbia University & The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Latham is a maternity lifestyle maven, wellness & birth coach, yoga teacher, and author. Her book is titled, “Mama Glow: A Hip Guide to a Fabulous and Abundant Pregnancy”. Her television appearances include The Dr. Oz Show, Fox News LIVE, CBS News, NBC-LXTV, and Inside Edition. She has been featured in the New York Daily News, New York Post, Time Out New York, Vogue.com, Whole Living, Experience Life Magazine, and The New York Observer. She lives in Harlem, New York with her 10-year-old son Fulano, a well known deejay, model, and all-around cool kid.

I reached out to Latham for a Q&A after watching her new interview series OM on the GO. In this show, she covers a variety of wellness topics. I LOVED all the episodes but her talk with Venus Williams really resonated with me on a deep level. Venus discusses how she dealt with illness and how she learned to develop a winners mentality despite the difficult setbacks. You can view that video by clicking the image below.

Q. Could you tell us what made you decide to pursue a career in health/wellness?

A. I felt a calling to do wellness work. To me there was no other option but to pursue what I felt so inspired to do. I was moved by my pregnancy and the labor experience and knew I needed to work with expectant and new moms. Now we have Mama Glow, thanks to the birth of my son.

Q. You are beautiful. Can you tell us about your daily regimen? What keeps you healthy, in good shape, and glowing?

A. Thank you! I love eating leafy green veggies. I practice a plant-based vegan diet which makes me feel radiant. I eat lots of good quality fats and stay hydrated. My movement of choice is vinyasa yoga. I also keep healthy boundaries so I am not over stressed.

Q. What challenges do you face maintaining this lifestyle and how do you overcome them?

A. I don’t face challenges maintaining my lifestyle – it’s a commitment, it’s the only choice. So I build everything around this goal to maintain optimal well-being. Whether traveling or writing a book, or launching a new project, I always make sure I am prepared. If you have what you need to feel supported then you feel powerful.

Q. Tell us about your son Fulano. Does he embrace this lifestyle?

A. Fulano is a healthy eater, athletic, practices his yoga when he is in the mood. He follows me because I am his primary example of healthy living, so yes, he embraces healthy eating as well.

Q. Could you share one of your recipes and/or yoga poses to reduce stress/promote healing?

A. We have lots of recipes on the website and Pinterest. I would say an easy yoga pose is the leg drain – This posture promotes rest. It will help drain any blood or lymph that has pooled in your legs, ankles, and feet, and gently lengthen the hamstrings. The floor provides a valuable feedback loop, allowing the spine to lengthen and stretch with maximum support. Bring your hips within a foot of the wall and lie on your left side. Send your right leg up the wall and, rolling onto your back, slide the left leg up to meet the right. Your hips can be slightly away from the wall, creating a 45-degree angle with the legs. Close your eyes and relax your shoulders, then breathe deeply. Stay here for a minimum of five minutes. Hang out here for 20 minutes a day and it’s equivalent to taking a 2-hour nap!

Q. Is there anything else you’d like to share?

In addition to launching the OM on the GO series with Scripps Ulive, I am launching our new website and mobile app for Mama Glow. Visit us for content in wellness, pregnancy, motherhood, and all things fabulous.
