06 Apr How Do I Create An Environment for Healing?

Rest and good sleep….That’s it!

We don’t do it. We brag about our impeccable work ethic. We praise people who proclaim their membership in #TeamNoSleep… and embrace terms like, “never not working”. This mindset is totally absurd.

NeverNotWorking

I am in no way encouraging laziness but please know that if your goal is to create an environment of healing in your own body, then it is imperative that you create the conditions to make it so.

Sadly, I am a member of the club I am asking you to reject. I work ridiculously hard. With a full schedule that leaves little room for both rest and sleep, I am here to tell you how much better my body feels when I treat it well. You see, I am writing you from sunny Miami Beach, Florida. I am sleeping until my body decides it has had enough. I woke up every day since I’ve been here and have done a variety of different exercises from traditional gym machines at the hotel, to running on a sandy beach, to rooftop yoga that offered one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen. This combined with good rest, ample sleep and delicious food, has my body vibrating at a different level than I have felt in a long time. The aches and pains that riddle my body after numerous surgeries and injuries are drastically reduced. The dark circles around my eyes no longer need concealer. The 3 o’clock slump does not exist. I could get used to this!

MiamiBeach

The girl from “the city that never sleeps” has traveled to “the sunshine state”. Every time I have the good fortune of traveling, I notice how people rush less and savor more. I want to feel this feeling on a regular basis. Before long I’ll be back home, back to working full-time, back to school, back to waking up and getting 3 little girls ready in the morning, back to the reality that is my very hectic life… how I respond will be the ultimate test. How much am I willing to invest in myself when the conditions aren’t ideal for rest and relaxation? Stay tuned…

Love this post – inspiring, insightful and beautiful. Yes food, exercise and rest are so important. One of the things I like to say in Moving For Life classes is that exercise done in the right state of mind can be restful and indeed should be recuperative not exhausting. When people do mindful movement with somatic (body-mind) awareness they find even a cardio-muscle strengthening workout joyful healing. Add some great music and it’s joyful too!

Another important fact is that these healing elements that Eileen emphasizes also change our micro-environment – the condition of our internal body and cells, killing infections and cancers. We all need this!

    Thank you Eileen!!

Thank you, Dr. Eddy! On this trip, I am learning how powerful restorative exercises are. I often resist movements like yoga and opt for more intense movement but my body loves this so much more. I have a lot of insights about rest and sleep but this trip made me aware how well my body and mind respond to gentle exercise like and yoga and moving for life. I’m very grateful to be your student and friend.
