29 Oct 10 Anticancer Foods (+ Recipes) That You’ll Actually Want To Eat!

There is a misconception that eating foods to prevent cancer is boring, bland and difficult to prepare. Now that the distraction of Pinktober is almost over, I am happy to share a list that you can use all year long. In case you didn’t know, Pinktober is a term used by many people who live with breast cancer for October – Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is heavily dominated by marketing of products with Pink Ribbons.

Below, I’ve listed 10 foods along with related recipes. Now you have no excuse to get cooking for your health. This is real prevention. Let’s GO!!!

1.      Cruciferous vegetables: (broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower, mustard greens, watercress) protect your cells from damage by removing carcinogens, reduce inflammation, neutralize oxidative stress, inhibit angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels that feed cancer cells).

  • Watercress Eating as little as 3 ounces reduced the presence of breast cancer tumors in just hours after consumption. Watercress has also been shown to “turn off” the blood supply to tumors.

2.      Mushrooms:  Women who ate at least 10 grams of fresh mushrooms each day (about one mushroom per day) had a 64% decreased risk of breast cancer. White, cremini, Portobello, oyster, shiitake, maitake and reishi mushrooms all have anti-cancer properties and are loaded with Vitamin D.

3.      Green tea: may inhibit the growth and spread of certain breast cancer types. It has also been shown to improve the survival rates of people with cancer. Additional protection was gained by women who ate 10 grams of mushrooms and drank green tea daily — an 89% decrease in risk for premenopausal women, and 82% for postmenopausal women.

4.      Medicinal Herbs: Turmeric reduces inflammation of the cell environment in which precancerous tumors are found, thus preventing these micro-tumors from further growth, *add a little black pepper to enhance turmeric’s potency*. Studies also show ginger may block different types of cancer cells.

5.      Berries” are some of the highest antioxidant foods in existence! It reduces inflammation, prevents DNA damage, and inhibits tumor angiogenesis.

6.      Healthy Fats: such as omega 3, avocado, raw nuts coconut and olive oils suppress cancer cell growth and the spread of tumors. *walnuts-have the highest content of antioxidants in all known nuts.

7.      Beans/Seeds: appear to inhibit cancer cells from multiplying. Eating beans, peas or lentils at least twice a week has been found to decrease colon cancer risk by 50%.  A recent study that revealed when flaxseeds were given to women with breast cancer, they showed a statistically significant reduction in tumor growth and enhanced survival as compared to women not given flax.

8.      Whole grains: carry toxins out of the body and eliminate waste. Because of their ability to stabilize blood sugar, eating whole grains can reduce cravings for sweet and fatty food.

9.      Garlic and Onions: are anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, anti-allergic and antiviral. It has been shown to slow tumor development and suppress its growth.

10.   Sea Vegetables: “treasures of the sea” Consuming sea vegetables has demonstrated the ability to bind with heavy, toxic molecules within the intestines and then to change them into insoluble salts, allowing them to be eliminated from the body.

    Thanks so much for sharing your story!! I’m also a TNBC survivor. I was diagnosed in 2016 at her age of 36. It was one of most challeging years of my life. I made it through. I still deal with anxiety of it coming back. Any tips on how to manage that. Thanks so much for sharing your story.
