On April 20, 2013, I presented at TEDMED 2013’s 20 Great Challenges, sponsored by the Brooklyn Free Clinic at the Gowanus Ballroom. It was honor and I was really excited to be a part of this momentous event. The talk is titled, “With A Broken Healthcare System, Can Patients Take Charge of Their Own Health?”. I believe my view as a healthcare management professional and a breast cancer survivor offers a unique perspective on this question. I can’t begin to tell you how much preparation, nerves, and sleepless nights went into this. I’d like to send a HUGE virtual hug to those who wished me well and sent loving messages during this entire process. It means the world to me and I hope to continue to make you proud.

What do you think patients can do to begin mending the broken healthcare system and take charge of their own health? Did you or a loved one experience a health challenge? How did you respond? There’s still a lot of work to do so let’s keep this conversation going.

I also highly encourage you to watch to Dr. Stephen Mark Goldfinger’s presentation from this event, titled Doing good and doing well: Can we make a career in service to the disaffiliated?. I found his talk truly inspiring.
